Taxes
Configure tax rates for your restaurant. Set up GST with the correct breakdown and apply the right tax type to each menu item.
Overview
The Tax module lets you define tax rates that apply to your menu items. The system supports GST with CGST, SGST, and IGST components. Each menu item can have an inclusive or exclusive tax type.
Tax Types
Tax Types on Menu Items
Inclusive
The item price includes tax. No additional tax is added at billing. Common for retail pricing.
Exclusive
Tax is calculated and added on top of the item price at billing. Common for GST-compliant invoicing.
None
No tax applied. Use for items that are tax-exempt.
How to Set Up Taxes
Go to Taxes
From the sidebar, click Taxes. You will see a list of existing tax configurations.
Add Tax
Click "Add Tax". Enter a name (e.g., GST 18%), code, and the total rate. Optionally add a description.
Add Rate Components (Optional)
For GST, you can add rate components like CGST (9%) and SGST (9%) to show the breakdown on invoices.
Apply to Menu Items
When creating or editing menu items, select the tax type (Inclusive/Exclusive/None) and set the tax rate. The rate can be different per item.
India GST Quick Setup
The system includes a "Seed India GST" option that automatically creates standard Indian GST rates:
- 0% GST (Nil rated items)
- 5% GST (Basic necessities)
- 12% GST (Standard rate)
- 18% GST (Standard rate)
- 28% GST (Luxury rate)
Each rate includes the appropriate CGST/SGST or IGST breakdown as per Indian tax rules.
How Tax Appears on Invoices
When a bill is generated, taxes are calculated based on each item's tax settings:
- Items with Inclusive tax show the tax amount as a breakdown but do not add to the price.
- Items with Exclusive tax add the tax amount to the item total.
- The invoice shows the tax breakdown (CGST, SGST, IGST) when available.
Note: Tax settings can be configured globally in your company settings. You can also set per-item tax rates for items that need special tax treatment.
